Uzbekistan has a rich tradition of miniature painting dating back to the Timurid era. Today, the country's miniaturists continue to create striking images that replicate the classic works of late medieval masters or find innovative ways to adapt the look and feel of Islamic miniature to newer aesthetic tastes. When we look at such works, however, we are often bemused. We marvel at their exquisite brushwork, but we find it difficult to understand them because they tend to depict a bygone, fantastical world far removed from the reality of
modern life.
The purpose of Strokes of Wisdom is not only to showcase some of the best miniatures produced recently in Uzbekistan, but also to teach readers how to approach these seemingly mysterious images and find meaning in them. Focusing on the work of a contemporary painter - the Bukharan master Davlat Toshev - the book interprets several miniatures in detail to reveal the stories they tell and the wisdom they hold. Ultimately, it demonstrates that these colour-ful mementos of the Islamic Golden Age offer insightful reflections that are still relevant to the present.
