The famous American writer and Romantic poet Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) is considered the founder of the detective genre in literature. In his stories, the author’s tendency toward speculative analysis and a consistent logical presentation of events—even highly improbable ones—is clearly expressed. The writer sought to give his stories the character of real facts that actually took place; hence the inclusion of police reports, exact dates, references to the periodical press, and so on. A tangle of contradictory and confusing facts is gradually unraveled thanks to a well-structured system of logical analysis, before which any mysteries are powerless.
